Have you managed to keep all your New Year’s resolutions so far? Neither have I, and I find that the related guilt is greatly diminished by a faulty memory. I can’t recall what my resolutions were. As a matter of fact, one month out, I am not entirely sure I made any, and I am feeling no guilt whatsoever.

But I digress.

This month, I want to make you aware of some changes we are making in the CLASS program. We think these changes will make CLASS an even more attractive alternative for you.

Speaking of alternatives, one of the changes is that you can request alternate publishers for selected courses in each grade level when you enroll. Veteran CLASS families know that we have traditionally assigned the entire curriculum, but we are moving toward giving families more choice in curriculum selection.

As you enroll, indicate in the comments section of the enrollment application what publisher(s) you prefer from the available choices. Click here to see a list of alternate publishers available by subject at each grade level. Unless there is some compelling reason not to do so, we will assign the publisher you have requested. Keep in mind that the current list of alternate publishers is only a starting point. We plan to expand your choices as we develop new courses.

CLASS has a reputation for providing a fairly rigorous curriculum. Families expect and want that from us. More than a few families, however, have asked us to reduce the amount of work we require so that they will have more time for educational activities of their own choosing. While we want to offer a strong curriculum, it is not our desire to dominate your day. With that in mind, we are changing our book report requirements. Historically, we have assigned five book reports each year for grades 4–12. Please note the following changes.
  • Grades 4–6
When you enroll, you will notice that we have not assigned book reports as a separate course. You may, however, still be required to complete a book report as part of some English courses. We still encourage students to read three to five books per year, and we will continue to include our suggested reading list to assist you in selecting good reading for your students.

  • Grades 7–12
We are also changing the book report requirement for these grade levels very soon, but the change is not yet in place. Keep an eye on the announcement page of our Web site for further updates.
When you enroll, you will notice that CLASS no longer assigns music, art, or physical education for grades 1 through 8. Although we encourage families to have their students participate in these activities, we will no longer send, nor require families to submit, Report & Identification sheets for them.

Even though you may not have kept up your New Year’s resolutions thus far, I do hope you will resolve to re-enroll in CLASS in 2008. It is our greatest desire to serve you, and at the same time, serve our great King
.

Sincerely,
Mark L. Beuligmann, M.S. Ed.
