The CLASS customer service phone team receives a steady stream of requests for help and guidance. For example, some of the most common questions that families ask are...

Q:
We have just decided to homeschool. How soon can we get started?
A: CLASS accepts enrollments year round. Homeschooling families are not bound by the schedules that are necessary for brick-and-mortar schools. With CLASS, your school year begins when you receive your books, and ends when you either submit the final work or when four quarters have passed. Your daily schedule is your own.

Our busiest enrollment months are August and September. Despite that, we strive to get the California Achievement Test to you within two weeks after we receive your enrollment application and tuition. We usually ship the curriculum about two weeks after we receive the CAT test. From the time you enroll, you should receive your books in four to six weeks, depending on how long it takes you to return the CAT test. For students entering grades 10–12, there may be a delay if we have to wait for transcripts from previous schools.

Q:
If I withdraw my child from the public school, how should I do it?

A: We recommend that you notify the school district in writing of your intention to withdraw your student. This way, you will not be considered truant. We also recommend that you adhere to your state laws insofar as your convictions will permit. You can get information about your state’s requirements from Home School Legal Defense Association at http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp. If you are enrolled in CLASS, we can provide certificates of enrollment if necessary. Contact our Customer Service Department if you need one. We also support and recommend joining HSLDA. There is a membership discount for families enrolled in CLASS.

Most often, you will experience little difficulty in removing your child from a public school and beginning homeschooling. You have a right to direct your child's education and to teach them at home. Occasionally, local school districts may attempt to hamper your efforts. Sometimes it is because their personal worldview holds that your children really belong to the state and you as the parent should not have those rights. It may also be motivated by the fact that the school district will lose a portion of its government funds if your child leaves. Neither is a legitimate reason for a school district to overstep the law.
