A demon lurks about these days, hoping to devour Christians by tempting them to seek salvation through politics. Perhaps this demon has tempted you. Have you ever thought that, if only we could get Joe Christian into office, everything rotten in this country could be purged and all things beautiful and righteous could be established? How often have you voted for someone who turned out to be a mere shadow of his initial promise?

First century Jews, who were watching for Messiah, were tempted by the same demon. In stark contrast to the meek and humble Messiah described in the Torah, they imagined a politician/warrior who would defeat their Roman overlords and put them back in charge of their own autonomous nation. In short, they thought their problem was a lack of political power. They were not at all prepared for a lowly carpenter to show them that their own sin was the root of all their miseries.

Neither are we modern Christians prepared to acknowledge that our nation’s miseries can be traced to our sin, and not the current political situation. We violate God’s laws. We do not pray. We are not thankful. We do not wait upon the Lord. We serve ourselves rather than our neighbor. We demand that the government meet every perceived need. Then we wonder why God seems to have abandoned us and wicked and venal men rule over us.

Christians, when you seek first the kingdom of God, when you humble yourselves before Him, when you keep His commands, when you raise up godly children in the fear and admonition of the Lord—when you do all these things—God Himself will arise, and as a mere by-product of His deliverance, He will sweep ungodly politicians out of office by removing their favor among the people.

The Scriptures plainly say that, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” As our nation enters upon yet another season of political change, let us as Christian home educators dedicate ourselves to praying for Holy Spirit-directed revival in our nation. We need a genuine reformation of our culture in terms of the Gospel of Christ. We will never achieve true progress through political action alone.

Sincerely,
Mark L. Beuligmann, M.S. Ed.
