This past weekend, I was watching a nature program on the public television station. The high definition photography was stunning. The commentary, however, was the usual, monotonously predictable, evolutionary drivel, complete with multiple perfunctory references to hundreds of millions of years, all delivered in the narrator’s best silver-throated bass tones—to enhance believability, of course—to deliver the lie painlessly and with an almost religious authority. I have become used to such commentary, but I found one statement particularly outrageous. The writer was obviously trying to weave environmentalist themes into his narrative, and had Mr. Silver-Throat say at one point, “Time and evolution have given us [our species] a conscience…” Step back from the microphone, Mr. Silver-Throat. Neither time nor evolution, nor the two in combination, are capable of producing a metaphysical product, indeed a spiritual product like a conscience. Conscience implies both the existence of right and wrong, and the capacity to make moral choices. Time and evolution know nothing of right and wrong, or morality. These can only be the products of the image of God in man, as Paul says, “comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (I Cor. 2:13) The proponents of evolution theory so want their view to be competitive with creationist views that they are willing to ascribe to evolution a religious significance that simply does not belong to it. Their failure is too obvious even to be considered a nice try. - - - - - Not to change the subject too quickly but, have you completed your Early Bird (no reference to the nature program mentioned above) re-enrollment application?
