Marxists and other secularists, whose philosophical roots are discovered in Darwin’s theory of evolution, posit that the parent generation’s answers to life situations quickly become irrelevant in an evolving environment, and that the younger generation should be free to develop its own answers as life “happens” to them. In this scheme, there is no God, there are no enduring truths, and thus nothing can be known about what “ought” to be.

According to this philosophy, teenage rebellion is seen as normal and necessary. The adolescent is supposedly discovering answers to life’s problems that his parents, fast becoming old and less adaptable, cannot understand. The evolving world has left the parents behind and, consequently, without viable responses.

If we truly lived in an evolving universe, this view might make sense. The reality is, we don’t. God created the universe—and man—and has governed both consistently since the beginning of time. It is the responsibility of parents to pass these ancient truths down so that one Godly generation will follow another. It is the responsibility of teens to learn the ancient truths, and live by them as their parents did.

In the Bible, God has given man a guidebook, an owner’s manual if you will, that has and will serve throughout all the generations of man, precisely because man does not change in any fundamental sense. There will always be parents who have trouble permitting their children to become adults, and there will always be teens who want more autonomy than they can safely handle. While that will result in some tension in those cases, the Bible-believing home need not witness teenage rebellion as a necessary component of maturation.

We are thankful to the Lord for raising up the vehicle of Christian home education so that God-fearing parents in the twenty-first century can pass on the eternal truths of God to the next generation.

Sincerely,
