Customer Service Mailbag

The CLASS customer service phone team receives a steady stream of requests for help and guidance. For example, some of the most common questions that families ask are...

Q:
How do I find out about CLASS rings?

A: Contact the CLASS Customer Service Department and we will send you the ring manufacturer’s information packet. We usually receive new information in late January. Rings are ordered directly from the manufacturer. We automatically include class ring information in the graduation packet that we send to 12th grade students in January.

Q:
May I speak with the person who is grading my student’s work?

A: Unfortunately that is not possible. Actually, your student’s work may be distributed across several graders. In fact, different graders may grade different assignments within one subject. For example, one person may grade test 3 and another will grade test 4 for one subject. In addition, some tests are graded electronically. That is why your QuickScore emails for one subject may come to you on different days and not necessarily in order.

If you have questions about a particular score, you may submit a Report Card Adjustment Request Form and ask for a written explanation of the score. Our Customer Service Research team will respond.

Q:
If we enroll in CLASS, do we have to notify our local school district?

A: If you are enrolled in CLASS, you may still have to provide state or local officials with some information. You should strive to comply with any laws that might affect you, but we do not recommend supplying any information beyond what is legally required because it may encourage school officials to seek the same information from other homeschoolers in your area. We encourage membership in the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) since they help protect home school families from overreaching school officials and other government agencies. Their web site http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp provides information about legal requirements in your state. They offer a membership discount if you are enrolled in CLASS. Your state or local home school organization may also be a good resource in such matters.

As Christians, we want to obey the law. We are not required, however, to submit to intimidation by people or organizations who are either philosophically opposed to Christian education and home schooling, or who have financial incentives to discourage homeschooling. While many public school districts respect home schooling, they do lose money for every student that does not enroll with them—in some cases a great deal of money.

We have always recommended that homeschoolers obey the law and remain civil in their dealings with local officials. At the same time we do not advise families to forfeit God-given liberties, some of which are also protected by law, without offering resistance through the legal channels God has provided. As our CLASS Handbook states, “He who will not use his freedom to preserve his freedom, does not deserve his freedom.”
