Customer Service Mailbag

The CLASS customer service phone team receives a steady stream of requests for help and guidance. For example, some of the most common questions that families ask are...

Q:
Is it ok if I send in payments with work to be graded?

A: Please do not send payments with work to be graded. The best way to be sure your payment is applied in a timely manner is to send it in a separate envelope addressed to our Finance Department. Checks or money orders submitted with work to be graded may not be found right away. It is also very easy for a small piece of paper, like a check, to get lost among large envelopes and assignments.

Q:
Why didn't you tell me some scores were missing?

A: Because of the flexibility of our program, you may submit assignments any time and in any order. We have no way of knowing whether you sent something to us until it is graded and posted in our system. We rely on report cards to communicate to you. Your report card will indicate whether the grade level is complete and, if not, which assignments are missing. If work was submitted prior to the quarter end date, but is missing on your report card, you should contact our Customer Service Research Department immediately with a Report Card Adjustment Request form. We can then open a research case and work to resolve the issue.

Q:
My state requires that state history be taught. Can CLASS help with that?

A: First, it is important to remember that your state can only set graduation standards for schools it controls. This would affect most public schools but not private, parochial programs such as CLASS. Only a few states have included state history in their requirements for home schooling families. Having said that, we encourage our families to explore such things on their own. We have some resources listed in our Handbook on pages 81 and 82 for State History and Canadian History. They are also available on our web site under Support/Resource Library. If you are enrolled but don’t know the user ID and password for the Support pages, please contact Customer Service. If your home school laws require it, or if you intend to transfer to a state-regulated school system, you should keep good records and make an independent home school transcript for the course you administer.

Q:
Why doesn't CLASS send lesson plans for my students?

A: The CLASS program provides a flexible partnership with you as parents. If we were to develop lesson plans, we would be scheduling your time. Some of our families complete a grade level in six months, others over nine or twelve months or longer with extension quarters. Depending on the student, you may want to concentrate on two or three subjects at a time and, once completed, move on to other subjects. Your schedule is up to you. We do provide handy forms for lesson planning in the CLASS Lesson Planner book or CD, which is a great help. Lesson plans need not be complicated to be useful. The main reason for planning lessons is to provide a schedule that enables you to finish on time. This is very important in regular schools where schedules are set to meet funding standards and manage large groups of students. Home school is, by its nature, much more flexible. While a lesson plan can help you meet your scheduling goals, if you need to take a few more days to finish a subject, or if you finish early, it does not really matter. Planning lessons can be as simple as dividing the year’s work by the number of weeks you plan to school. If you fall behind you can put in extra effort to catch up. If you get ahead you can relax a little.

It does help to plan how you are going to teach the material. The use of visual aids or activities, or the scheduling of specific time to review for tests, can be helpful but are usually difficult to plan too far in advance. Rather than detailed lesson plans, you may want to just set some time aside each week to look at what is coming up and think through some of these issues as you seek to keep your student accountable and on schedule.
