Since the days when Jesus walked the earth, theologians have speculated about how much He knew, as a man, about His divinity and mission at various times in His life. It is clear from Jesus’ public ministry that by that time He fully comprehended both. Even at the age of twelve, when His parents found Him discoursing with the teachers at the temple and voiced their concern over His absence, His response was, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Going back even further, Luke tells us that, after the infant Jesus had been presented at the temple, “…the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.”
While it may entertain us to wonder “what He knew, and when He knew it,” the power and progress of the gospel is sufficient evidence that Jesus knew what He needed to know when He needed to know it.
For us, I think there is a more productive pursuit. As we celebrate the Incarnation during this Christmas season, let us leave unfruitful speculations behind and demonstrate our maturity by growing into an ever-increasing knowledge and understanding of who Christ is, why He came—and who we are in Him.
Have a Merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous New Year!
Sincerely,
